The Brief (The RSA Design Awards briefs, 3. Signalling Change)
How might we tap into the potential of train stations, so they become spaces that amplify and influence positive behaviours?
Research
After familiarising myself with the brief I conducted desk research to better understand the types of people who use train stations. I went on a field visit to the different train and Dart stations around Dublin observing how people interacted with the spaces. After the field visit I then made a survey to ask peoples opinions and grievances with train stations, with the questions based off of my observations and desk research.
My Audience
This persona is based off of my survey results and desk research, which would go on to heavily influence my project.
Visual Research
I started by looking at intractable installations and different train stations around the world to see what they did differently to Irish train stations.
Research Outcomes
I found from my research that train stations cause people a lot of anxiety and are very overwhelming experiences, especially for people on the autism spectrum or who suffer from anxiety. I wanted to create a space that people could retreat to if they feel overwhelmed or panicked and use the the blended experience of a sensory pod similar to sensory rooms in airports and a friendly digital support app within the pod to help them become calm before their train journey.
